Mental Monday: Aspiration, Inspiration and Achievement

2014-03-28 14.21.42

We made it!

Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to the Foggy Frog and the Pain Gang Kickstarter Campaign, either through donations or through spreading the word and sharing the project with everyone they know. Because of all of you we have successfully raised the $7,500 we need to publish and distribute the first run of picture books!

After a week offline spending time with E and going camping, I am now back and ready to provide some informative and inquisitive posts over the next few weeks.

Some time soon (I’m hoping later this week) I will dedicate a post to sharing some of the behind the scenes stats I have from the campaign and outlining what the next steps are and where we are going.

Today though I want to talk about a topic which has been on my mind a lot lately…

(c) Megan S, December 2013
(c) Megan S, December 2013

What makes someone an inspiration?

Lately, with this Kickstarter campaign and just with the way I’ve been dealing with my illness, I have had a lot of people telling me I have inspired them to do things differently or just that I’m an inspiration to them. This makes me feel uncomfortable.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad that what I’m doing is helping others and making a difference! I just don’t feel comfortable thinking of myself as an inspiration. I still feel like I’m just aspiring to be who I want to be…

I would love to make a huge difference and help make this world a better place, both in terms of sustainability and the way humans treat one another, but I feel like I’m still learning and making things up a lot as I go along.

Maybe this is something that everyone struggles with.

The way I view myself and what I am doing seems to be different to the way others are viewing me. Being told that I have inspired others with the same illnesses as me to change the way they think about their life and to take on a project to help them have something to focus on is wonderful. It feels nice to know that I’ve helped that other person to make a difference in their own lives but it feels strange to think that others are looking to me for guidance.

People who have inspired me probably feel the same way. They come from all very different walks of lives. Some are famous and others are in the background, unrecognised.

I’m sure we all believe that we are just doing what we need to do. Most of us are not looking for fame and glory or any form of recognition other than a thank you or an encouraging comment. We feel ‘normal’ and ‘insignificant’ even, but others in our lives may view us as ‘heros’ or inspirations’ who demonstrate the behaviours and values that they want to be able to do.

Recognition and Achievement

I’ll admit that even I am surprised and overwhelmed by what I have managed to achieve in the last few months, but I still struggle with accepting recognition for these accomplishments. Everything I have achieved in my life has been possible because I have had support, I have had others helping me in achieving my dreams. I am very humbled by the support and encouragement I have been recieving.

Over the past 3 years (2012, 2013, and 2014) I have recieved recognition for my environmental work in the form of a nomination for the Channel 9 Young Achiever Awards – Flinders Port Environment Category. Each year I have been in the Top 3 Finalists for the award. I may not have won the actual award in any year, but to be nominated (or asked to nominate myself, as was the case this year) is an honour and I am very grateful for the opportunity to be recognised publicly for my work in this field.

On our way to the Channel 9 Young Achiever Awards Dinner 2014.
On our way to the Channel 9 Young Achiever Awards Dinner 2014.

Similarly, I am grateful and extremely humbled by the recognition and support I have recieved for the Foggy Frog and the Pain Gang campaign.

Thank you!

Without each and every one of you none of these achievements would have been possible. I may be an inspiration to others but my inspiration comes from the community spirit I see in the groups I have joined and in the friendships I have formed through this blog and my work.

Who inspires you?

What do you believe makes someone an inspiration?

Sunshine, Flowers and Friends

I am extremely grateful for all the awards I have been nominated for in my first few months of blogging.

Over January I’ve been focused on writing my regular posts and I haven’t had time to sit down relax and respond to those of you who have nominated me for awards.

JanuaryAwards

Today I’m going to do that. However, I may skimp on some of the rules as I’m trying to save my energy for the campaign and other big projects I have going on.

Firstly, thank you to Juliane from Journey Thru L for nominating me for the Sunshine Award.

sunshine

Juliane writes about her journey through Law School in a very engaging and entertaining way and she understands the community aspect of blogging, as can be seen from her final line in her Sunshine Award post.

Get out there, like, comment, and share the posts you enjoy… we all need a little love, right?

She is well worth checking out.

The Sunshine Award has been created to share with those who bring sunshine to your day and make you happy.

The rules of this award are as follows:

  • Thank the person who nominated you: see above and CHECK HER OUT!!!
  • List 11 facts about you
  • Nominate 10 other blogs
  • Announce the nominations to those you nominated!

Secondly, Shaun from Looking for reasoning to a complicated world nominated me for the Field of Flowers Award.

field-of-flowers-award

Shaun is an amazing man, who just has so much love and caring to share with the world. He is one of the co-founders of the Share Your WordPress Facebook page and is also one of the bloggers who has come on board to help me with the Foggy Frog and the Pain Gang campaign.

The Field of Flowers award is a fairly new award created by Patty from  http://petitemagique.wordpress.com

She created the award for the following reasons:

Note: I have created this new award because there are some people who I would give a field full of flowers if I could. Not just a couple of flowers… No, a field full of them. Because they can use it, to thank someone or because they simply deserve it. Flowers give color, flowers say ‘I Care’ and flowers are nature’s gift to us. You give them to show someone you care or to celebrate something. Just spreading a little love and care.

The rules of this award are:

  • Thank the blogger who nominated you (SEE ABOVE and please do check Shaun out, his posts are inspirational)
  • Place the award on your blog
  • Nominate 7 other bloggers and write a little something about why you would give these bloggers A Field Of Flowers
  • Let your nominees know that you nominated them

Finally, thank you to Dotta Raphels over at DOTTARAPHELS for nominating me for the Shauny Award for Blogging Excellence.

shaunyaward

Dotta writes about life and happiness in a way that inspires you to think about your own life. Please head over and check out her blog.

The Shauny Award for Blogging Excellence is another relatively new award and was inspired by Shaun from Looking for reasoning to a complicated world.

The rules of this award are very simple and straight forward:

  • Show Humanity
  • Show Love,
  • Be Yourself, Don’t Be Others,
  • Don’t Gossip,
  • and Share This Award with 10 others.

Now, as I mentioned at the start I’m not going to follow all the rules as this has already taken up a lot of my energy.

I’m not going to list 11 Facts about me, you can check out my previous facts I wrote for the Dragons Loyalty Award here or here.

Nominations

The following people are nominate for all 3 awards above:

  1. Celeste from Baking, Butter, & Happiness
  2. Jess from noonegetsflowersforchronicpain
  3. Elizabeth from Rag and Bone Shop of the Heart
  4. Barbara from Me, My Magnificent Self

Congratulations to all the nominees!

I’d like to take this opportunity to say that although I will continue to accept awards, the acceptances will be like this post.

Once a month I will do a post like this, acknowledging the nominations and accepting if I can.

Foggy Frog Simple Logo

Another welcome to the family, plus Liebster and Lighthouse Awards

I have been nominated for three more awards. Jenn from My Fibrotastic Life has nominated me for the Lighthouse Award, Amanda from My Crazy Migraine Life has nominated me for the Liebster Award, and Julia from Julie’s Spoonful of Sugar has nominated me for the WordPress Family Award. Please head over to each of their blogs and check them out. They are all amazing individuals who inspire me with their attitude towards the illnesses they are dealing with.

Given the number of awards and my level of fogginess lately, I’m going to list the rules for each one and then address the requirements. I will nominate the same people for all three awards.

wpf-award

Here are the rules for the WordPress Family Award:

1. Display the award logo on your blog.
2. Link back to the person who nominated you.

WHAT IT IS & WHAT TO DO: The Liebster award is a way for new bloggers to get known around the blogging community and to get to know others with similar interests. It is usually inferred upon someone with less than 200 followers. Upon receiving the Liebster Award you are to create a new entry linking back to the nominating blog; answer 10 questions chosen by that person; choose up to 10 nominees of your own; and come up with your own 10 questions for your nominees to answer upon accepting the award. Then notify the bloggers you chose.

The questions Amanda has asked me and my answers:

1) What are your most effective ways of coping with chronic pain or pain in general? Yoga and meditation seem to be my best tools. My medications don’t seem to be that effective.
2) What is your favorite movie and why? I don’t have a single favourite, but I always enjoy children’s animated movies such as Up, Alladin, Fern Gully, etc. I find that each time I watch them I see a different message in them and they also relax me and provide good background tv for when I’m in a crash. Basically I can focus and find new messages or just let them wash over me and either way they’re great.
3) What are the 3 main goals in your life? Find balance in my life (health, work, play, etc), start a family with E, and help others as much as I can.
4) Are there any songs that inspire you? Do you listen to music even when you’re in pain (on low)? I can’t think of specific songs at the moment (brain fog) but I go through phases where I listen to music and phases where I can’t focus on it at all.
5) What is your comfort food? Self Sauce Chocolate pudding (homemade or Orgran brand – gluten and dairy free)
6) What scares you the most about chronic migraines (treatment, symptoms…anything)? Migraines aren’t one of my major symptoms. What scares me most about my overall illness is not knowing if or when I’ll ever improve and not knowing what impact it is going to have on my future.
7) What motivated you to start your blog? What pushed you to do it? I considered starting a blog because I had found that early in my illness I got the most motivation and encouragement from reading other people’s blogs but it was only after discussing the idea with E and him saying that it was also a good outlet for me so I’m not always relying on him that I decided to jump in and actually start one.
8) Do you like to research treatments or procedures your doctor reccomends, or do you completely trust your doctor when trying something new? I do a combination of both. Generally though I do my own research (or E does it for me) and I’ve even taken suggestions to my doctor of ideas we can try.
9) Who can you talk to about your migraines? Again, migraines aren’t my main symptom, but I have a few friends that I can talk to about my illness without annoying them, sometimes E is happy to talk about it, my doctors, and here online.
10) What’s your favorite hobby and why? At the moment sewing and drawing. I find that they relax me and I really enjoy that at the end of the process (even if it takes me over a month) I have something to show for it.

Now on to the nominations:

  1. Leslie (Just another F-Bomb)
  2. Celeste (Baking, Butter, & Happiness)
  3. Trisha (Notes from the Fog)
  4. Julie (The Nocturnal Laundress)
  5. Claire (Living Being Doing with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome)
  6. Jess (noonegetsflowersforchronicpain)
  7. Jan (The Snail of Happiness)
  8. Toni (The Girl in Yoga Pants)
  9. Barbara (Me, My Magnificent Self)
  10. Lynn (Lynn Paints It)

Congratulations to all the nominees.

My questions for you as part of the Liebster Award are:

  1. What has been the proudest moment in your life so far?
  2. Who is your inspiration and why?
  3. How do you stay creative?
  4. What single quality do you most appreciate in people?
  5. What is your favorite post that you’ve written? (Please provide link!)
  6. What are three things you can’t live without?
  7. Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give your 13-year-old self?
  8. How did you pick your blog’s name?
  9. Describe yourself in 3 words.
  10. How has a major event in your life (like chronic illness) changed your goals for the future?

So that’s all for today. Once again, congratulations to all the nominees, you are all amazing individuals!

I’ve joined the Sisterhood…

Versatility, Imagination and another Dragon

Thanks to both Katarina from Painfully Aware, Shaun from prayingforoneday, and In Loving Memory Of Jody Ann Bales for nominating me for The Versatile Blogger Award, In Loving Memory Of Jody Ann Bales also nominated me for The Imagine Award and Michelle from Fibro… Dealing and coping through laughter and tears for nominating me from another Dragon’s Loyalty Award.

versatile-bloggerthe-imagine-award                           dragons-loyalty-award

The Imagine Award was started by a my friend Jenn at thefibrotasticlife.com. So, I will let her tell you all about it:

What is The Imagine Award?

“The Imagine Award” is an award created by Jenn Mulherin (who is the writer of the blog “My Fibrotastic Life!”) in October of 2013. This award was made in order to recognize the bloggers who express their passion and dedication towards their blogs through their creativity.

How is creativity found in a blog?

Just like beauty, creativity is in the eye of the beholder. There are many unique ways which bloggers can express their creativity. Creativity can be displayed through:

Words (such as writing fictional stories or real life experiences, poetry, quotes, using metaphors, etc.)
Pictures (this can include photos, comics, computer-drawn pictures, etc.)
Videos
The layout of the blog page
The degree of creativity is one of the qualities in a blog which not only draws more readers, but it shows how much the blogger cares about their blog. The caretaking of a blog is like taking care of a plant. In order to keep it healthy and growing, you need to feed the blog with your ideas and give it a lot of love.

If I am nominated for The Imagine Award…then what??

In your post which is dedicated to your award…

1. Copy and paste the award to your post.
2. Thank the blogger who nominated you and link their blog page to your post.
3. List 3-5 things about the nominator’s blog that you like (which you think are very creative).
4. Nominate 5 other bloggers/blogs which you think display a fantastic use of creativity and imagination.
5. Notify your nominees.
6. Copy and paste The Imagine Award to your blog page.

*If you decline The Imagine Award, that is okay, but please pass the award to a blog that you find to be very creative.

So, what do I like about In Loving Memory Of Jody Ann Bales? Let me tell you:

  1. The simplicity of her blog layout makes it very easy to read her posts.
  2. Her ‘header’ (not sure if that’s the right word) image is beautiful and captures my imagination about where the angel is and who she’s looking down on.
  3. I love the simple use of images and the different types of posts, e.g. Letter to Jody

The rules for The Versitile Blogger Award are:

Here are the rules for the award:

Thank the person who gave you this award. That’s common courtesy.
Include a link to their blog. That’s also common courtesy — if you can figure out how to do it.
Next, select 15 blogs/bloggers that you’ve recently discovered or follow regularly. ( I would add, pick blogs or bloggers that are excellent!)
Nominate those 15 bloggers for the Versatile Blogger Award — you might include a link to this site.
Finally, tell the person who nominated you 7 things about yourself.

So as per the last few Award posts I’m hoping to conserve energy, so I’ll share 7 interesting facts about myself and will nominate the same bloggers for both the Versatile Blogger Award and the Imagine Award, but not the Dragon’s Loyalty Award.

7 more interesting facts about me:

  1. My eyes seem to change between green and bluish grey depending on what I’m wearing.
  2. I have quite a collection of soft toys.
  3. During high school, singing and walking were my escape mechanism when I was stressed or upset.
  4. I struggle to sleep, especially when home alone.
  5. My favourite tv shows are usually mystery and crime related; especially Bones, NCIS and BBC ones, like Sherlock.
  6. I don’t really have a favourite colour (bright colours and multi-coloured is usually good)
  7. My best time of day for mental activity is mid-morning after I’ve had breakfast and done some form of exercise.

And onto the nominations:

I hope 10 is enough because I’ve spent 3 days on this post now and I can’t focus on it any longer 🙂

Congratulations to all the nominees and thank you to everyone for reading my blog.

Don’t forget you can now follow me on Facebook and Twitter.

So Many Award Nominations!

Wow, It seems that whenever I think I’ve got on top of my award nominations, more appear! Given my limited energy I’m going to try and combine these into one post, so I apologise for the length of this post (it’s taken me a few days to write!)…

I’d like to thank Julie from Counting My Spoons, and thebetterwaycfs from The Better Way for nominating me for 2 more Dragon’s Loyalty Awards.

dragons-loyalty-award

Guess What?!?! I’ve got another Dragon and a 2 Star Blog!

I’ve been nominated for yet another 2 awards!

Thank you so very much to Celeste over at the wonderful Baking, Butter, & Happiness for nominating me for another Dragon’s Loyalty Award AND another Blog of the Year Award!

As I wrote previously, Celeste and I have a lot in common and she has a wonderful combination of life stories and delicious recipes over on her blog. I really recommend visiting if you haven’t already.

dragons-loyalty-award

Celeste has made it clear that she doesn’t want those of us who have already received the Dragon’s Loyalty Award to repeat the process, but I thought it would be unfair not to at least share 7 more interesting facts about myself, so here we go again…

  1. Although I’ve now been overseas 4 times (New Zealand, USA and Malaysia – twice ), I haven’t been to many places around Australia yet.
  2. I’d love to go on Safari in Africa and see the wildlife.

  6. I’m over half way through a Bachelor of Education (Primary) but have had to put it on hold because of this illness.
  7. Our house is pretty much full of Lego.

Now that I’ve completed that, lets move on to the Blog of the Year Award.

6-And as a winner of the award- please add a link back to the blog that presented you with this award-and then proudly display the award on your blog- and start collecting stars!

Because this post is already quite long and my energy is flagging I’m going to keep the nominations today short and sweet.

My Blog of the Year nominations go out to the two bloggers that inspired me to start blogging. Jess from My Journey Thru M.E. and Jenn from My Fibrotastic Life. Both of these ladies have inspired me not only to become part of the blogging community but also in other aspects of my life. Jess’s posts have helped me in my experimentation with what activity levels work for me, and Jenn has been an inspiration and one of my biggest supporters in exploring the other aspects of my creativity.

Congratulations to the award nominees and a massive thank you to Celeste and everyone else who has supported me and encouraged me throughout the last month. This has been a scary exercise, starting my own blog and sharing my life with the world, but you support and friendship has made it a very enjoyable experience and one I will continue participating in.

Blog of the Year Nomination!

As mentioned in my previous post, There are Dragon’s Everywhere, 3 of my fellow bloggers had nominated me for awards in the past few days. In that post I wrote about the two Dragon’s Loyalty Awards I had been nominated for, in this post I want to thank Jenn from My Fibrotastic Life for nominating me for the Blog of the Year 2013 Award. This is an amazing honour to me, especially given I’ve only been blogging for the past month!

Now onto the lovely nominees… (I’m starting to crash again, so this will be very short)

Jess (noonegetsflowersforchronicpain) writes about her life with chronic pain and the struggle and joys she has with having started a family since her accident. I have found her posts inspirational in helping me come to terms with achieving my goals even with a chronic illness.

Jan (The Snail of Happiness) writes about living a sustainable life in whatever way you can. This is a topic that is very close to my heart and I’ve found that her words really resonate with me.

Celeste (Baking, Butter, & Happiness) shares many of the same hopes and dreams for the future as me. She writes about living with chronic pain and cooking dishes that reduce pain.

Congratulations to all three of you, obviously I wish I could nominate each and every one of the blogs that I read but energy and logic dictates that I keep this list short.

There are Dragons Everywhere!

Wow, I’ve been away (posting already written posts, or picture posts) for a few days and in that time I’ve been nominated for awards by 3 other bloggers!

To help me get through accepting them today I’m going to cheat a bit and combine two of them in this post.

I would really like to thank Dawn from dawnyhosking and Julie from The Nocturnal Laundress for both nominating me for the Dragon’s Loyalty Award. Both of these ladies have amazing blogs with a great combination of illness related conversations and fun, entertaining posts. I hope you both don’t mind that I’ve combined you’re nominations into one post. I’m just coming out of a week long crash.

dragons-loyalty-award

The philosophy of the award is: The Dragon’s Loyalty Award is an award for the loyal fan/commenter, whether the recipient is a fellow blogger or just someone who follows and comments regularly”.

There are some rules that one must follow in order to fully accept the award and they are as follows:

1. Firstly, display the Award on your site. You earned it and you deserve it!

2. Link back to the person who gave you the award in your acceptance post;

3. Nominate 15 well deserving bloggers for the Award and let them know the wonderful news by sending them a message on their site;

4. List 7 interesting facts about yourself

So I think I’ll start with the 7 interesting facts about myself:

  1. I love singing, although since getting ill it uses up too much energy so I don’t do it as much as I used to.
  2. Before getting ill I had delivered environment and sustainability workshops across Australia and in Malaysia.
  3. Over half my wardrobe has come from Op Shops or Vintage Stores.
  4. I love musicals and animated movies.
  5. I have a life membership to our local Zoological Society.
  6. I have a double degree in Arts/Science with Honours in Environmental Sciences
  7. I’ve started writing a children’s book to help parents with ME/CFS and Chronic Pain explain what they are going through to their children

I hope 7 is enough because I don’t have the brain capacity to come up with any more 🙂

Discovering my inner peace

OK, I said I was going to be out today but I was too excited about letting you know about the new award I’ve received and I’ve got a little energy right now so here it is…

Yesterday the lovely Jenn from My Fibrotastic Life nominated me for the Inner Peace Award. Thank you Jenn!

This award has very simple rules for accepting (as written from DonCharisma.org):

The only “rule” for the inner peace award is that you write a short piece on why you are accepting it. I would suggest that you forward on to other bloggers who you think would like it, 3-10 up to you:)

SO… without further ado (because I’m having a bad day and don’t know how long this clarity will last),

I’m accepting this award because ‘inner peace’ is a very important part of my life. I have always avoided arguments whenever possible and I try to find peace in everything I do. Some of the activities I do that help me find my inner peace are meditation, walking, yoga, creating things by sewing or card making, being out in nature, and spending time with the people and animals I love. ‘Inner peace’ is something I believe everyone is always searching for because it leads to happiness and joy in life. It can mean different things to different people and can be found in many different outlets.

The following blogs are the ones that I feel encapsulate what inner peace is or show that they are searching for inner peace through their posts.

  1. The Snail of Happiness
  2. The Girl in Yoga Pants
  3. noonegetsflowersforchronicpain
  4. Baking, Butter & Happiness

Congratulations to each of you for showing us what inner peace is or what steps are need to discover our inner peace.

Brain fog is setting in again so I’m going to sign off here.
